what?

Orange is an animation studio set up in Amsterdam, Netherlands for the purpose of making an animated short film. The team is made up of a diverse mix of artists and developers from all over the world, all united with a common goal.

why?

Because we have a story to tell. We’re also really enthusiastic about open source software and interested in applying those open concepts to our creative content. Our project will be a great opportunity to bring together artists and developers in a professional quality production to research and create innovative open source tools and processes.

how?

Throughout our production, we’re going to use and favour open source software tools such as blender all the way. We’re also going to release all of our production files, 3D models, textures, animation as Creative Commons open content on the extended edition DVD for you to inspect and use however you please.

Studio Orange Begins Pre-production

/ by Orange

The Studio Orange core team is now complete and together and we have begun the pre-production phase of our open movie project!

We have a brand new website, with a blog that we'll keep up to date with snippets about the movie, concepts and shots, technical tests and info, and general ramblings from the team. Explore the site and keep checking back often to see our progress! Feel free to post your comments here, too. We hope to use this to enable more open interaction with external volunteers, but more on that later!

For the next six weeks, we will be working on concept design, scripting, storyboards, technical research and development, in order to present a teaser trailer at the 2005 Blender Conference in Amsterdam. From here on, production will begin in earnest and continue until our deadline next year.

To help make this project a continued success, please help us out by pre-ordering the extended edition DVD with the movie, making-of documentary and all productions files as open content. Check it out at the e-shop.

We're releasing some of our initial concept ideas and drawings to give an idea of what we're going to be working on. In order to keep our energy focused and coherent, we can't reveal everything at once, but here's a brief description:

Title: Machina

Deep in the folds of a giant machine, two characters and a little robotic duck explore the twisted and dark complex of wires, tubes and cogs, until one day a conflict arises that throws out all our assumptions about the world that they inhabit... This 3D animation movie short couples passionate characters with a truly epic story line.

And some initial visual concepts:

Creative Commons License

/ by Ton

After a careful study of the possibilities, we've decided to adopt the Creative Commons for both the end-product (movie) as for the all the files that were used in the creation process (.blend files, models, textures). We'll adopt a license allowing freedom to commercialy re-use it, make derivatated works and distribute it at choice. The final text for the license will be published in September. The software as being developed, for Blender, will of course be published under GNU GPL.

You can help us to realize this project by purchasing the DVD of the movie in advance. The DVDs will include the movie in high quality widescreen, making-of documentaries and all production files. And even better, all orders before September 1 will get their name mentioned in the credits of the movie!
