beyoglu street art

I’m still waiting to get some chemistry to process the 18 or so rolls of 120 film I took in Turkey last November. Until then, I’ve uploaded a collection of street art I saw and shot on digital around the Beyoglu area in Istanbul. It was a beautiful place to be hanging out, and I was impressed by the amount of burgeoning creativity.

Just uploaded some fun gakkenflex shots from around the neighbourhood to flickr. Used the naniwa color kit to cross process an old no-name 100 iso slide film we found in a shop in Essaouira, Morocco.

In Japan I bought issue 25 of otona no kagaku (loose translation ‘science for adults’), a very cool magazine that comes with a DIY project attached to each issue. Issue 25 features a 35mm TLR camera, in parts, to be constructed from the shutter mechanism and lens assembly all the way up.

It’s basic and fully manual – fixed shutter speed (determined by the strength of the internal springs, around ~1/150 apparently) and fixed aperture, though you can change it by disassembling the lens and rearranging some elements. It’s lots of fun though, much lighter than the mamiya c330 ;), and at around AUD$30 was a decent price for a plastic toy, compared to the ridiculously expensive hipster ‘blackbird fly’ which doesn’t even have live focusing through the viewing lens.

My birthday was last week, and I have a new toy! Kat managed to hunt down from ebay a Mamiya c330f (shipped from Pakistan!) medium format twin lens reflex. Thanks! :) I’ve had my seagull (below, right) for a few years now, and it’s been lots of fun and served me well. It was already a cheap knockoff camera though, and ever since I broke the ground glass focusing screen and did a dodgy fix, replacing it with tracing paper, it just hasn’t been quite right.

Many of the shots I took with the seagull in Morocco were unsharp and so I’m really happy to retire it in favour of the great lens in the new Mamiya, which is a beautiful, quality piece of machinery. Looking forward to running off the first few rolls.

If you’re subscribed to this site’s RSS, you may have noticed me gradually cleaning and putting online photos from my Morocco trip. Well, they’re finally all up on flickr (or at least the ones worth looking at!)

They cover our trip through Casblanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, Erg Chebbi and through the desert to Ouarzazate, Essaouira and Marrakech. Kat’s photos are much better and more plentiful though, so have a look there if you want to see pictures of me looking goofy too.

A few weeks ago, I returned from about a month spent in Morocco with Kat. Apart from a minor incident – splitting my eyebrow open after having a food poisoning-induced seizure on the floor of the bathroom in the middle of the night, everything was great. It’s a beautiful, ancient country of amazing extremes, the people were kind and welcoming, the food delicious.

I’ve been slowly putting a few photos on flickr – so far there’s Casblanca, Rabat and Chefchaouen. More on their way. It was great to take the seagull out for a spin, although it seems the focus on it isn’t so accurate any more after I accidentally broke the ground glass screen and replaced it with tracing paper to keep it in action. Perhaps it’s time for retirement.

Melbourne Graffiti Redux

Over the holiday break I spent a couple of days in Melbourne, and of course went on a graffiti spotting tour again to some of the excellent locations there. There are a few alleys that are pretty much outdoor art galleries, with art all over the walls that’s seemingly not only tolerated, but encouraged.

I’ve got the film back from processing and scanning now and uploaded to flickr. Interesting to see how things have changed from the last photos I took in 2005…
